Learning How to Learn Instead of Learning
The Impact of the Quarantine on Education
Since Gen-Z’s are known for their addiction to devices and screens, I thought that the quarantine would be easiest for them.
But hearing from my Gen-Z sister, they are facing the same challenges as others with the work from home experience. I realized the broader negative impact this is having on education and her college experience.
Studying in environments that are not conducive to learning.
Similar to working from home, where there is no train to catch or other physical action that defines going to work, students are missing the physical demarcation that signifies that they are in class. Waking up and not needing to change out of pajamas, means that you are more than half-asleep during class.
Being at home is also marred with other challenges. Our household is loud. For some reason, even when we aren’t angry at each other, we always sound like we are yelling at each other. Our small NYC house has pretty thin walls, where these voluminous voices can easily pass through the paper-thin walls. College is not a quiet place, but having someone yell — I mean speak — can be so distracting.
